If you are feeling intense fear, heart palpitations, or shortness of breath, follow these 5 steps to calm your nervous system:

5 Look around: Acknowledge 5 things you can see around you (e.g. a clock, a chair, your shoes).
4 Touch: Acknowledge 4 things you can feel (e.g. your feet on the floor, your shirt fabric).
3 Listen: Acknowledge 3 sounds you hear (e.g. distant traffic, fan humming).
2 Smell: Acknowledge 2 things you can smell (or pleasant scents you like).
1 Taste: Acknowledge 1 thing you can taste (or take a sip of cool water).
